I just put the cancer out of my mind. On our return, I had my first surgery on August 9, 1994. The ovaries and uterus were removed. My family was told that I had no more than 6 months to a year of life expectancy. My CA-125 count was 404. Normal is 35 or below. I began a full year of chemotherapy. It amounted to 13 sessions. I was scheduled for a session every 3 weeks, but there were times that my blood and platelet counts were too low. My oncologist would delay the session until we could get the counts back up. He was careful to not let it result in Leukemia. This required blood transfusion and 10,000 units of Pro-Crit that my husband was trained to administer at home. My husband put me on a strict antioxidant diet; fruits and vegetables; no meat, no dairy products or sugar. He made fresh carrot juice for me every morning and still does even today. I lost some of my hair on each chemo session, but not all until the last session. At the end of the first year, my CA-125 had come down to 9. I lived a fairly good life for about one year. I think maybe, I became over-confident and started eating some of the things that I had been doing without. It was difficult to find different ways to fix fruits and vegetables so I could stay on the antioxidant diet. My CA-125 started creeping back up to 88. CT scans revealed a 5cm mass in the abdomen. So, I went in for my second surgery. The mass was removed and they performed a complete hysterectomy. Then followed about 6 months of chemo. CA-125 was back down to 13. This was followed by about 6 months off and 6 months back on chemo. The last 2 sessions were done in my home. This was 5 days in a row every 3 weeks except when my blood and platelet counts were too low. My condition was also affected by the fact that I have Congestive Heart Failure and partial blockage of my carotid arteries. My condition was weakened to the extent that I was totally dependent upon my husband to take care of all the home chores as well as prepare my meals and see that I had all my medications as prescribed. He keeps details records of our every visit to the Primary Physician, the Oncologist, Radiologist, Pharmacist, Laboratory and Hospital. On June 17, 2000, he took me to the Emergency Ward of the hospital where I had been to on at least 5 occasions before and where I had my two surgeries. My Primary Physician and one of the Oncologists at the hospital recommended that I apply for admittance to the Hospice Program. I was visited in the hospital by a representative of Hospice who explained to me what it entailed. I agreed and was accepted at that time. I was visited often by a Registered Nurse (who checked my vitals and ordered medications which Hospice paid for), a Social Worker, a Chaplain, and a Nurse to bathe me.
